Day 3: What's about A loose framework forum on other projects not covered by main conference topic areas. Kim 'Kaos' Olsen - NCPTA website: - At last conference it was decided we needed a site to help connect mobile and wide spread industry
- Message board/chat room also seen as important
- Mailing list
- Need to combine sites from Conference and Association
- Continuously updated information is important, not just pretty pictures
- Site needs to be easily navigable for those new to computers
- Site needs to load quickly for those who access site from older computers, internet cafés, etc
- Remided to use 'refresh/reload' to get newest information
- Use site as a portal to other sites and information
- Kim took the plunge and started site, will alter and improve based on feedback
- Better to send information to a central point (someone) who will put it on the site rather than updating it yourself
- Use website for publicity for shows, courses, festivals, issues, everything
- Currently sponsored by Vicnet. At end of year, look at who hosts the site, ongoing funding
- Will distribute questionnaire to assess what is wanted from site
top of page ^ Christina Koch - Project: "Performance and the Body" Proposed: execute pre-publication phase of interviews of people in industry. Intention: published in book form. Project in response to: - Why physical performance has gained popularity?
- Claim that no outstanding independent artists.
- Environment - generate wealth and knowledge mix arts background (broadening) opera, choir, fringe areas of physical theatre.
- Spirit in performance body and voice - how is it generated.
- Lack of forum for comparison.
- Project does not intend to be academic but create area where voices/opinions can be heard.
- Much needed documentation.
- Time to acknowledge, learning and pool of knowledge.
- Project doesn't include a lot of circus performers so far - because non-contactable - will change.
- Hope book will attract large body of readers due to extensive backgrounds of interviewees, diverse nature of their work and presentation.
- Could be good resource, document and great for advocacy and good for education.
top of page ^ Adrian Kiernander Aim: To create annotated database to record and analyse what has happened in the physical theatre and dance industries from 1985. Parameters:
- Working from events which fit definitions of physical theatre.
- Not work of entire company or individuals but events.
- Specific training regime - clearly physical.
- Physical creating another world.
- Words using to analyse Australian National identity - physical theatre clearly making an impact.
- Focus on multicultural society.
- Lumps of culture - discreet assemblages of knowledge "interculturalism" ways being incorporated as well as:
- Gender
- Sexuality
- Literacy - moving in a direction beyond literacy, no longer need to reduce events to a singular method of recording.
- Use database through "keywords"
- Model - "Project Patron"
- Series of different media windows e.g. written, photos, videos (create annotations) scores of music etc. Means you can study craft.
top of page ^ Godfrey Sim - Circo Arts Spoke in Papuan New Guinea language - gave thanks to PNG tribe and Christchurch. Described Circo Arts as a "Shotgun Wedding" between institute and circus freaks and has now reached the belligerent teenager stage. Teeth gritting problems: - Providing evidence to institute that there was a real need for training
- Developing philosophical framework (somewhat dynamic)
- Program development - needs approval and reviews
- Marketing and telling people who they were
- Having to educate society about school!
- Finding staff (done with no on site admin)
- Equipment - upgrading etc
- Achieving National Accreditation
- Implementing internal and external moderation
- Developing Health and Safety Plan
Called on Bill Blaikie to give an impression of Circo Arts uniqueness: - Great venue - taken ideas and created something unique, let them specialise but feed in other possibilities.
- Draws on strong European approaches - not Chinese.
- Stronger physical theatre base.
- Combination of diverse skill areas let them produce.
Called on David Sampford - Graduate of Circo Arts to comment on course: - Originally from Brisbane and now returning In NZ - no physical theatre circus arts companies Overwhelming to return to Australia where there was competition, but the self discipline achieved through the course has helped.
- Daunting but knew he had the skills to survive.
- Final wish for the Australian National Circus industries to embraces Circo Arts as their school - by no means in competition - but as part of Australia's industry.
top of page ^ Michelle Ijitsma Personal background in administration, visual arts and technology. Got involved in Circus through Vulcana Work with West End Youth Group - "Connect Action" in the set up, running and management of local youth "Creative Thinking Group". Projects run out of there - "Studying Artists", "Yogurt", "Community Kitchen", "Food for Art", "Seeds" - will get accreditation from TAFE for people running their own businesses. Action learning process - not theory - actually doing it, has mentorship's, professional development Noticed lack of support networks once in circus industry. Trying to establish these networks. Showcase arts fair at Powerhouse on December 7, 8, 9. top of page ^ Tim Smyth Only 4 public access flying trapeze rigs in Australia, and now Quasar has set one up at the Sydney Sports Academy.
