Bob and his brother Pepito, Byl E. Bob and his brother Depito... Included, as always, the famous fashion parade plus games, prizes and giveaways.

Westside Circus is inviting students from local high schools and participants from the Westside “Circus in Schools” Education Project to a FREE performance at the Westside Circus Space as part of our National Youth Circus Day celebrations!
There will be two fantastic shows to watch. Helium is presented by our youth ensemble Behind the Wall - they scramble up high, play on stilts, launch themselves in all directions and have the most contagious kind of fun. These young people have been training weekly at Westside for one to five years.

Spilt Milk is an irreverent and quirky investigation of the hazards of expressing and denying our feelings. A dynamic work of physical theatre and clowning which explores emotional well being and human relationships in all their messiness. Westside Circus’ Professional Troupe is bendy and strong, acrobatic and dexterous. They play hard and bounce off one another, throw each other in the air and squeeze themselves into tiny spaces. Equipped with a red nose, a magic hat, a violin and a tower of scaffolding, Westside Circus dares to reach beyond the boundaries of the blues.
Other events as part of National Youth Circus Day include Tick Tock Team workshop for parents and their pre-school children, Westside Crew youth class and a showing of Learning to Fly a short documentary from our Westside “Circus in Schools” Education Project featuring refugee and newly arrived young people from the Western English Language School and Sunshine West Secondary College.

Trix Circus presents - 'uplifted'
Acclaimed South African Aerial Artist and Owner/Director of Trix Circus, Rodleigh Stevens, in association with Hayley Linthwaite, ignite the Gold Coast Arts Centre with ‘uplifted', a spectacular and dreamlike journey of an avian love story…..

Seamlessly integrating virtuosic circus, new media technologies, physical theatre, dance, lighting, puppetry, animation, haiku and music, ‘uplifted’ is a story of courage, fantasy, humility and the extra-ordinary. Performing artistically dangerous and athletically spirited physical action the work exposes Trix Circus’s talented students, all of whom are from the Gold Coast and greater Brisbane regions. Promoting the State’s increasing accessibility to circus, ‘uplifted’, reveals explosive physicality and a dynamic circus style accessible to international and local audiences.

Founding Director of Trix Circus, Rodleigh Stevens, says the idea behind 'uplifted' is to create a contemporary theatrical context whilst embracing the multicultural heritage of circus. “The philosophy of Trix Circus aims to become a major inventive and creative force in Australian Circus, offering quality circus experiences for all audiences. We are dedicated to performing with excellence and, within this production, creating innovative physical and new media theatre dialogues.”

Lyrical in style, epic in scope, this debut of Trix Circus's work in the GCAC is not to be missed. Co-commissioned and co-presented by the Gold Coast City Council, four performances will run over the 13th and 14th September 2007. Which coincides with National Youth Circus Day on the 13 September. Matinee performances begin at 1pm and evening shows at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 for children and $25 for adults for bookings contact the Gold Coast Arts Centre on (07)5588 4000.

Dr Plonk
(rated G, on general release in cinemas nationally)
The latest film by writer/director Rolf de Heer stars Nigel Lunghi, Magda Szubanski and Paul Blackwell.
Shot in black and white with a hand cranked camera this film is an interesting mix of the old fashioned and futuristic.
Dr Plonk of the title is played by the incredible Mr Spin (Nigel Lunghi) who is both an accomplished street performer and multi-talented mainstay of the Tasmanian Circus Festival. In the story, Dr Plonk is a visionary who works out that the world is scheduled to end in 2008. In a bid to avert disaster he builds a time machine.
The film tips its hat to the great film comedies of Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton.
Highly recommended.
We love you Mister Spin!

Venue: Odeon Theatre, Norwood (cnr Queen Street & The Parade)
Connected features an extraordinary cast of 15 new and old Cirkidz artists in a fun and thought-provoking mix of physical theatre and contemporary circus. A cast of characters, people from different worlds but all looking for the same thing…
• Teenage boys pushing the limits (physically and socially) – there’s an accident waiting to happen!
• A troubled girl. She’s the coolest kid in the school, pretty and popular. Gorgeous on the outside, but how is she really feeling inside? The sharks are circling, but she’s not letting anyone know what’s going on behind her mask.
•A gang of girls, playful and innocent, exploring the scene, working out where they fit in the social spectrum.
• Then there’s the smelly kid. You know the one. He’s a bit grotesque, the outcast. Where does he fit in?
We watch these characters and more as they journey through a day. Armed with modern technology, and access to more information than ever before, these young people are more connected than ever …or are they?
Circus acts include:
Tumbling - Aerial Cloud Swing – Trapeze - Group juggling – Contortion - Hula hoop – Diabolo -
Mini Trampoline - Human Pyramids - and much more…

Ever want to run away with the circus? Well, these young people have! The Cirkidz Troupe presents its 15th feature theatre show.
This year, under the guidance of new Artistic Director Dan Aubin, members of the Troupe went back to the beginning and asked “What is Circus?”

Many answers came: Fun, strength, flexibility, courage, flight, technique, and determination. The list goes on. One answer stood above the rest and is in every part of the circus… connection. It’s not just a clever title.

Whether it’s the split second connection between a spinning club and the juggler’s hand, or the precariously balanced connection of a six person high human pyramid, a subtle look exchanged between two acrobats that cues a dangerously timed flip, or the rise of an eyebrow that lets the entire audience in on a character’s secret. These connections are all around us everyday as we work, play and go to school.

Modern culture is connecting more and more through technology. Amazing new gadgets give young people access to more information that ever before and it is being ingested at a higher frequency than ever. Multi-tasking young people are instant messaging while doing homework, playing games online and watching television at the same time.

This new generation is more connected than ever before…or are we?
Suitable for families and children aged 10 and up
Tickets Public Shows: $15 adult, $10 children/concession
Schools Shows: $7.50 per student

Helsinki flips for Strange Fruit
Arts Hub -

Australian performing arts company Strange Fruit drew such crowds at a major Helsinki arts festival that public transport ground to a halt.
The Melbourne based acrobatic troupe were performing in the street of Mannerheimintie outside Parliament House for the 19th Helsinki Night of the Arts (part of the annual Helsinki Festival).

Scandinavian daily Helsingin Sanomat reports that the Aussies were "far and away the biggest draw of the evening", luring crowds of over 70,000 people.
"Police had warned in advance that if the crowds around their performance area in front of Parliament exceeded 5,000, they would shut down completely," according to the paper. "This conservative figure went west around an hour or more before the first performance at 19:00, and by showtime there were an estimated 20,000 people packed into the area. Traffic that had managed to get into the exclusion-zone before the police flipped the switch was completely surrounded and immobilised by the throngs, and trams, buses, and long-distance coaches had to be hastily rerouted. For the second show two hours later, the police shut off Mannerheimintie completely."

The throng was a record crowd for the Helsinki event.
Strange Fruit were appearing as part of their European tour. They have already visited festivals and top venues in France, Germany, The Netherlands, Ireland, London, Romania, Scotland, Portugal, Poland, Luxemburg and Sweden. Following their Helsinki engagement they will appear in Italy, Spain and Moscow, Russia.

To celebrate National Youth Circus Day members of two well known youth circuses – Flipside and Spaghetti Circus will be having an evening to get to know each other better when they attend the opening of Trix Circus latest show – “uplifted” on September 13th. Also, members of Flipside Circus will be taking the opportunity to tell ‘circus stories’ at their respective schools on NYCD.

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus - presents 'Circus Girl'
Note: There is some debate as to whether there are only tickets available for school bookings. The Arts Centre Ticket Office can’t be contacted by phone and there wasn’t time to confirm the status of tickets for the general public before this newsletter goes out.

It explores the struggles and triumphs of being a female in the physically demanding and emotionally confronting circus industry.

For the young female artists involved in Circus Girl, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus has been their education, community and at times even their family. This work explores their memories, stories and feelings, focussing on their passion, dedication, strength, courage and resilience.

Circus Girl explores issues that resonate with young teenagers everywhere. Young people today are bombarded with images and role models of what they should and shouldn’t do. The physical training and demands on the female circus performer whether it be tumbling, flying on the trapeze or being thrown through the air, requires someone who is prepared to come home with bruises, broken nails and a battered ego.

These young women face challenges on a day-to-day basis. How they support each other in continuing to do what they love, regardless of the pressure placed on them by the media and their peers, is the subject of this production.

Based in Albury Wodonga, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus is uniquely positioned to be able to develop and create this work. As the only full-time circus company for performers aged 4 to 18, the company is both a training and performance company. Many of the young artists of The Flying Fruit Fly Circus go on to international careers with the likes of Circus Oz and Cirque du Soleil.

“The local Flying Fruit Fly Circus is world famous – funky, contemporary and setting the agenda for acrobatic arts” Paul Edwards – The Sunday Age
When - 12 September 2007 - 14 September 2007
Venue - Playhouse (Victorian Arts Centre)
Times - 10am & 1.00pm

National Institute of Circus Arts and Melbourne International Arts Festival present:

DiVino

Join incredibly talented artists from the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) for their Festival debut. Directed by Italy’s own Valeria Campo, DiVino combines circus, music, theatre and dance in magical show for the whole family.
DiVino takes its inspiration from Federico Fellini’s recently published script The Journey of G. Mastorna, which tells the story of a group of young performers on their way to the most important audition of their lives. Forced to land in an unknown country, reminiscent of Fellini’s Italy, the stranded travellers arrive in a piazza. This piazza becomes the place where dreams, memories, nightmares, comedy and pathos, circus and life collide. Director Valeria Campo, internationally renowned for her commedia dell’arte work and training methods for actors, was inspired by the youth and creativity of the NICA students to develop a chorus of characters reminiscent of the teenagers in Fellini’s film Amarcord.

DiVino is a celebration of the eclectic imagination, an extravagant circus performance full of colour, movement and luscious imagery. This Festival season is the first in NICA’s remarkable new state of the art circus training and performance space.
