presents...RUNNING WRITING
Writing for Physical Theatre

A Two Day Workshop with Jan Cornall
Thursday 13 and Friday 14 March 2008,
9am - 4pm

How can I make my mind sit down and write, when my body knows better what it wants to say?

Over two days we explore the language, imagery and power of body/mind story building.

Entering via meditative techniques into the heart of observed moments, we gather the elements - language, imagery and emotion landscape - of our body/mind narrative.

Working between the abstract and the defined, between movement and stillness, we are free to build or destroy the essentials of character, action and dramatic tension vital to our stories.

Every movement, every thought, every sound, every colour, every smell, every taste, becomes fodder for our story maps, as we learn to blur the space between conscious movement and conscious thought, and allow our story to write itself.

By the end of the two days you may have a new performance piece, beginnings of a script, a journal of discovery or a map for future creative development.

ABOUT JAN
Jan Cornall began her performance career at La Mama and the Pram Factory in Melbourne in the late 60’s. She has been an actor, writer, solo performer, cabaret artist and comedienne and has written over 10 produced plays and musicals, a feature film, novel and three CD’s of songs. Since 2000 Jan has taught writing at universities (UTS, UWS), community colleges, writers centres, arts communities and festivals, in Australia and the Indonesia. Her ‘meditative writing’ techniques produce startling results and ‘break through moments’ in novice and experienced writers across genre, modality and cultural divides.

Acts include:

The Pitts
Bronte Webster & Gareth Bjaaland - Australian
From humble beginnings on a farm in Pittsville, Tasmania, brother and sister duo Cessil (Master Magician, Fakir Extraordinaire and self-proclaimed Lord of the Dark Arts) and Sandy Pitt (long jump champion south-west Tasmania 1992) present an affectionate, charming homage to the eccentric outback life. This duo brings together comedy acrobatics, unusual juggling, bizarre contortion, audience participation and offbeat humour to provide a stunning and funny show that reminds us of the benefits of marrying strangers. They are about to embark on their third tour of Europe, Scandinavia and the Balkans.
The English Gents
Hamish McCann & Denis Lock – Australian
'The English Gents' are two delightfully devilish and cordial English gentlemen, who perform inconceivable feats of acrobatic skill, strength and balance, whilst casually sipping tea, reading the newspaper or whatever tickles one's fancy.
The act mixes highly skilled acrobatics with a dry English wit, unexpectedly climaxing with the two hilariously bearing near all for Queen and country.
THE LEOPARDMAN
Gavin Hay – Australian
The Leopardman returns to the streets of Australia by popular demand. After spending the last 3 years living and working in Croatia.
A one-man circus show with a mixture of physical comedy, juggling, and stupidity!
Watch and be amazed, as the street becomes his stage while he attempts more and more difficult tricks culminating with a handstand on a small chair, 3 metres above the ground!
OzStar Airlines
Katie Wright and Elouise Green – Australian
Fasten your seatbelts, place your tray tables in an upright position & prepare for take-off with this high-flying comedic duo. Your flight attendants Stacey &Tracey will provide an exciting array of live in flight entertainment. Get boarding passes ready and be amazed as these globe trotting hostesses Juggle the in-flight merchandise, entertain you with safety demonstrations & Hula Hoop until they take off! Just before landing OzStar reaches incredibly high altitudes as Tracey balances on NOT One but Two of Stacey’s shoulders while performing the five hula hoop separation – splitting the hoops on five different parts of her body!
SK8CRCS A skateboard Circus
Brant Matthews - Canadian
All A BOARD! All A BOARD! The "SK8 CRCS" is rolling into
town. Watch a mix of Circus skill with Skateboard style. You'll See *A short history of skateboarding
*Fire Juggling on a skateboard
*Jumping off ramps through a flaming star!
This one-man show from Montreal Canada is a world leader in Skatertainment. This is his first time at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Pedro Tochas
Portuguese
Translated as The Sculptor Clown, this interdisciplinary work is the one-man equivalent of “Wallace and Grommit”.
It’s a visual treat for all the family that will never cease to entertain and amaze.
Akin to your favourite silent movie, expect with an elaborate language of facial expressions, the telling of (convoluted) tales filled with immortal love, a full entourage of discombobulated feelings and all the mishaps and mayhem that accompanies the beautiful evolution of life.
Miss Tallulah and the Ladder of Men
Sharon Mahoney - Canadian
"Sharon from Canada" is your typical Canadian; friendly, patriotic, apologetic and extremely polite.
With the help of her four males volunteers, she magically transforms into the one, the only, the very very, Naughty; "MissTallulah".
This burlesque, "Funky-Amazonian", in turn, transforms her "man-helpers" into the hero's of the show and teaches these boys what being polite is about !
Spanna
Leeroy Hart - Australia
Yep – he’s back, coming out of retirement for one festival only! Maybe you remember him from Circus Oz, Bizircus or maybe just from early days of The Adelaide Fringe Festival, banging out his solo street show or the duo “Fatt Matt & Spanna” all those years ago! He’s had 8 years away from the street.
If he gets it right, be assured you’ll be amazed and amused. If he gets it wrong, it will be hilarious. This seasoned clown stems from Darwin but has branched out all over the world. An Australian idiot that entertains young and old with ease, don’t miss him!
aRTy Ms
Theaker Von Ziarno - Australian
Watch out for the new breed on the streets! International Aerialist and ‘rigger chick’ Theaker von Ziarno is insanely solo and divinely determined to re enchant the every day.
This girl ran away from the circus of the fine arts to create ‘aRTy Ms’, one of the very few ‘aerial street’ shows working the world of busking.
Take heart…. she hula hoops fire then performs breathtaking stunts high in the air on aerial silks and static trapeze.
Ulla Taylor – Australian
With pastels and knees pads in tow, Melbourne artist Ulla creates public, (con)temporary street murals the world over.
Since 1987 Ulla and her art have featured at many community and corporate events- in Australia, Canada, Europe, and Asia.
Watch her street art evolve over the days of the event and dissolve over months.
