-wondrous nonsensical meaning that may
or may not save the world- Direct from international tours of the underground circuit, the infamous vaudeville humourist The Birdmann ventures into his third Melbourne International Comedy Festival with his most innovative show to date. From nightly recurring blackouts The Birdmann must link clues of the moment with irrelevant events to construct a series of shows within a show. This highly original show follows The Birdmann's exploration into love, loneliness and the mystery of the black stiletto. The Birdmann in Episodes of Significant Timing will exhibit The Birdmann's trademark talents in magic, music, escapology and the vaudeville arts. This Green Room Award Nominee will even execute the feat of stopping his own pulse, making him the only performer at the festival to die on stage - at least literally. Described as the David Lynch of clowning, The Birdmann will be dark, obscure, wonderfully irreverent and similar to the feeling of watching SBS after a night out. The man like no other man will deliver humour and skill from obtuse angles to create a world like no other world that is sure to be a regular late night festival night cap treat. |

‘The
Circus is coming to Town
Williamstown Festival 2008
The 31st Williamstown Festival is the Carnivalé
of the Western Region of Melbourne.
The Williamstown Festival is an annual cultural, artistic and community
celebration for the people of the Hobsons Bay municipality. The festival
has celebrated its 30th Anniversary this year and is a prominent event
on the Hobsons Bay calendar. It is expected that more than 15,000 local
residents and enthusiasts from the wider western suburbs and Melbourne
will join in the 2008 festivities.
This year a new Festival Director has been appointed, Ruth Allen. Ruth
is committed to Community Cultural Development and the constant celebration
of the wonders of life. She has conceived the concept of bringing the
circus to town. Her vision embraces a collective of circus art performers,
companies, institutions and smaller community groups. Ruth’s aim
is to introduce the culture and art of circus to Hobsons Bay municipality,
Williamstown, the western region and the wider suburbs of Melbourne.
The circus has been chosen as the highlight of the 2008 program
because;
* Of its direct connection to the audience. The very nature of circus
as a visual and physical medium means that many more people can access
it. Circus being largely non-text based has the power to transcend language,
age and cultural barriers, and therefore reach a greater audience.
* It is a vibrant industry particularly here in Melbourne due to a diverse
and dynamic culture of independent companies and performers, Australia’s
leading circus export; Circus Oz, and the National Institute of Circus
Arts (NICA).
* Circus has a natural capacity to evoke excitement, wonderment and
intrigue; it is this delight and energy that we now wish to bring in
its full richness to the 31st Williamstown Festival.
Of its intrinsic value as a fundamental tool in developing the physical
and mental well being of society. Circus has a well established record
of re-building workplaces and communities.
