Try diving in Feet First
Legs on the Wall is seeking applications for Feet First - a new initiative designed to assist emerging physical theatre artists develop new work.

Four successful applicants (individuals or groups) will be selected to participate in a six-week creative development including:
• 120 hours in the Red Box in Lilyfield, Sydney
• 2 x 1.5 hour led training sessions per week
• A production grant of $875
• Mentoring with Artistic Director Debra Batton and Artistic Associate Simone O’Brien
• Consultation with a Lighting Designer (tba)
• Project Management skills development with Legs on the Wall management

The program will run from Monday 23 July to Friday 31 August 2006 and will conclude with two public showings.

Successful applicants will be those who demonstrate the ability to fulfil the guidelines of the Feet First program including interest in and commitment to physical theatre.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS:
Simone O'Brien is a performer, writer, director and teacher of circus and physical theatre. She is currently the Artistic Associate for Legs on the Wall and has worked with Circus OZ, ABC KIDS TV, Club Swing, Stalker, The PartyLine, The Women's Circus (Melbourne), and the National Institute of Circus Arts.
Drew Fairley, acclaimed performer and co-writer of sell-out shows - most recently at The Seymour Centre in Sydney - 'Bangers & Mash' & 'No Chance in Hell Hotel,' is currently artist-in-residence at Wollongong University and an MC for festivals both local and nation-wide.
Trent Baumann is an independent vaudeville artist who goes by the name Birdmann. Trent has made a few versions of feature shows for the Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Comedy Festival, and Hobart Summer Festival and has also toured internationally on the street and stage circuit.

Big Top Circus Tent for sale

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus is selling its much loved 1200 seat, pink and white big top circus tent. The Flying Fruit Fly Circus tent has been the scene of some of the company’s major artistic successes including the Sydney Olympic Arts
Festival, numerous seasons at Moore Park in Sydney and at major festivals across Australia.
Buying The Flying Fruit Fly Circus tent is buying part of Australia’s performing arts history. The company is seeking expressions of interest from organisations/ individuals interested in either the tent skin/poles and seating system, or from organisations/ individuals that may be interested in either one of these components.
There is a detailed condition report and photos available on the skin and the poles. The seating system has not had a condition report done but it was last used in 2004.
The skin/poles are housed in 1 shipping container while the seating system fits into 4 shipping containers. The containers will be included in the sale cost.
The tent is sold as is, where is and the purchaser will need to arrange transportation from Albury no later than June 30th 2007.
Expressions of interest should detail:
1. whether you wish to purchase
a) the skin and poles
b) the seating system
c) the whole tent comprising both of these elements
2. the amount you wish to pay (plus GST)
3. confirmation that you will remove the containers prior to
June 30 2007

The Devine Carnival Circus Hub
Melbourne Fringe Festival 2007
September 26th – October 14th
Expressions of Interest

I am producing a shared venue for the Melbourne Fringe this year, as a way of bringing together the many companies who are hoping to produce circus shows as part of the festival.
The venue I am planning for is Northcote Town Hall. The Town Hall is situated on High street and is easily accessible via public transport. The local council (Darebin Council) is very supportive of the concept of a circus hub and is keen to further establish the space as an arts precinct.
The benefit of having a shared circus venue is that by pooling resources and creating a vibe around the one venue will make for better audiences. The venue will also be marketed as one entity so with any luck this should lead to a flow on effect for the shows that take part.
Some details of the venue:
The stage is at floor level and the useable space is 13 meters by 9 meters. There is 9.5 meters of height to the roof (there is a chandelier with 6.6 meters clearance underneath).
There is a seating bank in the hall that seats 100 people, seats on a ground level will supplement this, raising the capacity to 180.
Currently it looks like I should be able to provide both lighting and sound operators, as well as front of house staff.
Lighting and Sound equipment will be provided, but lighting options will be minimal. Unfortunately we cannot hang lights in the venue, so everything will be on lighting trees.
Each show should get around 8 hours tech / rehearsal time in the venue.
As it stands it is not going to be possible to set up an aerial rig in the venue. However, we will be setting up an aerial rig in the courtyard outside the hall. So, if each company chooses they are welcome to use the rig for an aerial act pre-show. The rig will be 8 meters high and 6 meters wide.
Also we will be holding 5 daytime gala shows on the rig as a promotion for the venue (its also the reason that the council is covering most of the cost of the aerial rig). These shows will be listed in the Fringe guide as a free event. I hope that all the companies using the venue will choose to donate acts to this show. The acts in this gala do not have to be aerial acts.

National Youth Circus Day 2007
Start planning now for the inaugural National Youth Circus Day! Youth Circus is one of the fastest growing arenas for youth recreation and expression. As a way of celebrating this fact, the first National Youth Circus Day is set to take place on September 13, 2007, a date chosen to coincide with the second Catapult Festival, a biennial festival with a focus on circus and physical theatre and showcasing youth groups.

National Youth Circus Day will be a series of events presented by Youth Circuses across Australia and promoted to the wider community.

Get involved! Organisations with Youth Circus programs - from schools to professional companies, from community groups to established Youth Circuses - are being asked to plan an event to join in with the day. The event may be as simple as a training session open to the public’s view or as large as an opening night for a major season.

The thrust of the day is to promote the benefits to youth of participating in a Circus program, benefits that extend far beyond the obvious personal and social growth parameters most often reported on. However, the day will also be an opportunity to present the role played by Youth Circus companies in the community and the role played by ACAPTA in supporting those companies across Australia. It will also give the young people participating the opportunity to feel connected to their peers throughout the country.

ACAPTA will be contacting as many Youth Circus organisations as it can find and asking them to become involved, to support this vital part of Australian culture. ACAPTA will be asking organisations to register their interest in the event, to nominate how they will plan to participate and how they will support ACAPTA in its drive to strengthen the industry through this National Youth Circus Day.

Participant registrations now open for Catapult 2007 - September 12-16 Catapult burst onto Australia’s art and cultural calendar on September 16-18, 2005 in a flurry of colour, energy and sheer circus and physical theatre talent. The second Catapult Festival is less than six months away and organisers are calling on youth circus and physical theatre troupes and their communities throughout the country to lend their support to ensure it’s even more spectacular than the first. To achieve this goal Catapult organisers are calling on the communities throughout the country to throw their support behind their local circus and physical theatre performers to ensure they’re at next year’s festival to make it bigger and better. Catapult Program Coordinator Stephen Champion strongly believes this festival is worthy of community backing. “Catapult is the first festival in Australia to showcase the skills of young circus and physical theatre performers and participants are welcome from across Australia and from abroad,” he said. “Another thing that makes Catapult unique is that it is not only a festival for young performers but also attracts some of the best adult professional performers currently practicing.
